Sepia-toned photograph of a gentlemanly-looking Gentleman Jim Corbett in a tux, signed "With best wishes". Corbett was World Heavyweight Champion from 1892 to 1897 and fought in the first title fight to use boxing gloves.
Inscribed photograph signed "To/To/Mrs S, Holstead/with best wishes/Yours truly/Jas J Corbett". Black ink notations at top edge and lead pencil notations on verso. B/w sepia-toned, 7¾x9¾ overall, 7¼x9½ image, one surface, printed on cardstock. Corbett (1866-1933) defeated John L. Sullivan in a 21-round decision in New Orleans, Louisiana to become the World Heavyweight Champion in 1892. The fight was the first title bout in which boxing gloves were used. Corbett was champ until 1897 when Bob Fitzsimmons won a 14-round decision in Carson City, Nevada. The dapper and articulate Corbett, known as "Gentleman Jim", appeared on vaudeville stages and in several films of the 1920s. Lightly toned, silvered and bowed. Signature in top right corner has low contrast but is legible. Negative and reproduction errors in image. Lightly soiled on verso. Otherwise in fine condition.
