"Gentleman Jim" Corbett (1866-1933) was one of the greatest heavyweights of all-time and has been called the "Father of Modern Boxing" because of his innovations in fighting style. In the fight that used big boxing gloves for the first time, Corbett defeated World Heavyweight Champion John L. Sullivan in 21 rounds on September 7, 1892 in New Orleans to win the title, losing it to Bob Fitzsimmons in 1897. Corbett was 66 when he died in Bayside, Queens, N.Y. on February 18, 1933.
