Oscar-winning actor James Stewart signed this document in 1948 to appear on an hour-long radio adaptation of the play That's Gratitude, for which he received $2,500. Also signed by producer Armina Marshall for the Theatre Guild.
Document signed "James Stewart" in blue ink and "Armina Marshall" in black ink. Pencil notations at top edge in unknown hand. 2 pages, 8¼x10¾, 1 sheet, front and verso. Aug. 23, 1948. Addressed to Mr. James Stewart c/o MCA Artists, Ltd., New York City. Stewart and Marshall signed this to confirm and arrangement for Stewart to appear on a Sept. 26, 1948 radio adaptation of the play That's Gratitude. Stewart was to receive $2,500 for his performance. Marshall headed the Theatre Guild's radio division, which adapted Broadway plays to radio from 1945 to 1953. This hour-long show, sponsored by the United States Steel Corporation, moved to television in 1953. STEWART (1908-1997, born in Indiana, Pennsylvania) starred in more recognized masterpieces of the American cinema than any other actor. In 1940, he won the Best Actor Academy Award for The Philadelphia Story,and he was nominated for Oscars in the same category for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), It's A Wonderful Life (1946), Harvey (1950) and Anatomy of a Murder (1959). Stewart, who was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1984, also appeared in You Can't Take It With You (1938), Destry Rides Again (1939), The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), Rear Window (1954), The Spirit of St. Louis (1957), Vertigo (1958) and a long list of other features. MARSHALL (1894 or 1895-1991),born in the Cherokee Strip of the old Oklahoma Territory and who first appeared on the Broadway stage in 1924, became a prominent playwright and producer. She was also a co-administrator of the Theatre Guild, whichhasproduced 228 Broadway plays as of 2002. Marshall shared a Tony Award for the stage version of Sunrise at Campobello in 1958 and a special Tony (1961) for organizing the first repertory group to tour the world for the U. S. State Department (at the behest of President John F. Kennedy). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Paper clip impression at top left corner. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
