JIMMY STEWART
He wants "to do an aviation picture".
Early TLS: "Jimmy Stewart", 1p, 6¼x8½. No place, 1938 November 2. To Lillian Baas. In full: "Thanks ever so much for your very nice letter. I've sent you one of my late photographs under separate cover, and hope you'll like it. I'm very glad you've enjoyed my screen work. I've just finished making 'Made For Each Other' and am now making 'Ice Follies' with Joan Crawford. An ambition of long-standing has been to do an aviation picture, if only I can persuade MGM to agree with me. What do you think of the idea? Thanks again for writing. I'd appreciate hearing from you from time to time and learning your opinions on my future pictures as you see them." Made for Each Other, in which the 30-year-old Stewart costarred with Carole Lombard as Johnny and Jane Mason, a recently married couple forced to forego their honeymoon, was released in 1939. In Ice Follies, Stewart played Larry Hall, a professional ice skater whose act breaks up when his friend and partner Eddie Burgess (Lew Ayres) marries Mary McKay (Joan Crawford). Stewart got his wish to make an aviation picture 17 years after he wrote this letter. He starred as Lt. Col. Robert "Dutch" Holland, a World War II fighter pilot called back to duty in Paramount's 1955 drama, Strategic Air Command. In 1957, Stewart portrayed Charles Lindbergh in Warner Bros.' The Spirit of St. Louis. Horizontal fold touches "J", "S" and tops of both "t"s in signature. 1¾x1¼ cut from blank right margin into text, touching five words (all intact). Lightly creased, light stains on verso (no show through) and at bottom blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
