Rare signature from the English dramatist on a letter to an
associate, apologizing for the tardiness of his letter
Autograph letter signed: "J. Kenney", 4½x7½. August 23. In
part: " Dear [illegible], not yet home; letter bill yesterday +
have therefor sent my letter down to the office for fear of being too late. If
you will be able to see this in print [illegible] + in a favorable place
- but only if [illegible] you to inconvenience. Yrs sincr". English
dramatist James Kenney (1780-1849) wrote his first play, Raising
the Wind, in 1803. The play was a success, and he went on to write more
than 40 dramas and operas between 1803 and 1845. Most popular of his plays
was Sweethearts and Wives (1823), which had been revived
several times after it's debut. Kenney's plays were particularly popular for
their castings, including leading actors Sarah Siddons, Lucia Vestris, Samuel
Foote, and John Liston. His son, Charles Lamb Kenney, went on to become a
successful journalist and dramatist in his own right. Normal mailing folds.
Toned. Left edge worn and torn. Corners lightly worn and creased. Small stains
on bottom left corner. Bottom edge slightly worn. Stained on top right corner.
Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
