JAMES KILGALLEN
The longtime New York journalist thanks fellow columnist for doing a good job on his daughter's interview. His daughter was Dorothy Kilgallen, a journalist who died under mysterious circumstances and is a frequent case for JFK conspiracy theorist. Letter of interest!
Typed letter signed: "Jim Kilgallen" in blue ink. 1 page, 8½x11. Written on International News Service letterhead. New York City, New York. January 2, 1940. Addressed to columnist Louis Sobol, at the New York Journal. In full: "Dear Louis: Your "Cosmopolite" on Dorothy was splendidly done, as neat and accurate a piece of journalism as I've ever read in a magazine. You pictured her just as she is, and I was particularly pleased with the next to last paragraph in which you gave the 'tip-off" on how she deports herself today. I want to thank you for the story, and congratulate you on a fine piece of writing. Sincerely yours". James "Jim" Kilgallen (1888-1982) was one the U.S.'s best-known newspaper reporters in a career lasting seventy-five years, 38 years at the International News Service. Over his long career, Kilgallen covered many popular stories such as the Lindbergh baby kidnapping case and the German surrender in Rheims, France during World War II. He is also well known due to the prominence of his journalist daughter, Dorothy Kilgallen, who died mysteriously in 1965, some suspect for conspicuous governmental reasons after she openly criticized the government's handling of the JFK assassination. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Corners creased. Light surface creases. Slightly worn. Lightly soiled on verso. Tear in upper right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
