JAMES KING 4x5¾ black and white photo signed by the talented tenor Printed Photograph signed in Ink: "Avec amitié [With Warm regards]/ James King" translated in full from the French, b/w, 4x5¾ overall, image 4x5¼ (one surface). Captioned at lower margin: "James King als Paul/'Die tote Stadt'" [German for "The Dead City"]. Tenor James King (1925-2005), who began his career as a baritone, made his American debut with the San Francisco Opera and his international debut in Florence in 1961. From 1962-1965, he was a member of the Berlin Deutsche Oper, where he sang in French and Italian. During that time, King made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1963, where he sang mainly Wagner and Strauss roles. King, who sang at the Bayreuth Festival (as Lohengrin, Siegmund and Parsifal) from 1965-1975, debuted at New York's Metropolitan Opera House in 1966. The star of a number of German film, television, and radio opera productions, King appeared on U.S. TV in Elektra (1984 and 1989, as Aegisth) and Die Tote Stadt (1983), among others. He then became a voice teacher at the Indiana University School of Music. Fingerprint visible at left background. Otherwise, fine condition.
