JAMES L. BUCKLEY The Senator and current judge signed this typed letter to his friend W. Ernst Minor Typed Letter Signed: "James Buckley" in black ink on a 7x10¼ letter. Written to W. Ernst Minor. Features United States Senate letterhead. Dated August 1, 1972. In Part: "I must confess, how-/ever, to some personal regrets that you opted / against teaching at Hotchkiss as this would / have provided me with a better chance to keep / in touch with you". The older brother of writer William F. Buckley, James Lane Buckley (b. 1923) defeated both the Democratic and Republican candidates in 1970 and served as Conservative U.S. Senator from New York from 1971-1977. As Senator, he authored the so-called Buckley Amendment, familiar to all educators as the strict limitation on release of student records. His first book, If Men Were Angels: A View from the Senate, was published in 1975. Buckley, who served as President of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty from 1982-1985, became a Federal Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia circuit, in 1985. He has been inactive in this position since 1996, although he is still listed as a senior judge. Most recently, he had a copy of his book Saving Congress from Itself (2014) sent to every U.S. Senator office of the 114th Congress. Normal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
