JAMES LEO "ONE EYE" CONNELLY
The infamous gate-crasher pens a note to an admirer on this album leaf
Autograph Note Signed: "Joan/ With my best wishes/ One Eye Connelly" 5x4½. James Leo "One-Eyed" Connelly (1869-1953) was a well-known gate crasher who started out as a bantam-weight boxer. However, he eventually lost his eye in a fight, and thereafter became known as "One-Eye Connelly". Connelly started gate-crashing in 1892, sneaking into the 1892 Sullivan-Corbett heavyweight title match. He continued in his mischievous ways, becoming widely known for his unparalleled ability to sneak into sporting and political events. In 1928, he was famously ejected from a Yankees game by the Babe himself. Paper loss at upper corners. Rippling at center toward top edge. Mounting remnants on verso. Dated "7-15-40" on front in an unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
