Autograph Note signed: "Jim" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 6¼x4½. On personal Senate card. No place, no date. To "Chairman Patrick" [Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan]. Ink stamp on verso: "96 Feb 27". In full: "Thank you neighbor for helping us with the New England Dairy Compact. We've got to keep those cows on the hillsides. I enjoy working with you and admire your stand on welfare." James M. Jeffords (1934-2014), formerly a state legislator and Vermont's Attorney General (1969-1973), represented his state in the U.S. House (1975-1989) and Senate (1989-2007). On June 6, 2001, Jeffords changed his party affiliation from Republican to Independent, causing control of the Senate to shift from the Republicans to the Democrats. (Republicans regained a slim majority in the body in 2003.) DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN (1927-2003). Moynihan served four terms in the U.S. Senate (1977-2001) as a Democrat representing New York. A prolific author, Moynihan held positions in the administrations of four Presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford. Moynihan was chairman of the Committee on Environment and Public Works (1992-1993) and Finance (1993-1995). He lost the latter post when Democrats lost control of the Senate in 1995. Ink note (unknown hand) at top center. Otherwise, fine condition.
