JAMES S. MARTIN
Aerospace official comments on Viking landings on Mars.
TLS: "J.S. Martin" as Vice President, Advanced Programs and Planning, Martin Mariette Aerospace, 1p, 8½x11. Bethesda, Maryland, 1977 August 16. To Paul Henley, West Orange, N.J. In part: "I believe that history will judge the Viking Mars Program to have been a significant event in the exploration of our solar systems. It is likely that the Viking landings in 1976 will be only the first of several such voyages and the overall importance will probably depend upon the findings of the total exploration program. For example, if we can unravel and understand the differences between Mars, Earth and Venus, we will answer questions that could significantly impact mankind...I personally believe that there is a high probability that life exists somewhere in our universe. It just seems improbable to me, speaking as an engineer, that other solar systems would have been formed without life somewhere...." Launched August 20, 1975, Viking 1 made a soft landing on Mars on July 20, 1976 and continued to return data to Earth until November 1982. It was the first U.S. space probe to make a soft landing on Mars. Viking 2, launched September 9, 1975, made a soft landing on Mars on September 3, 1976 and continued functioning until 1980. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
