James MERRILL (1926-1995), the son of brokerage firm co-founder Charles Merrill, had his
first volume of poems published in 1946, while he was still an undergraduate at Amherst
College. His Divine Comedies won a Pulitzer Prize (1976). He was also awarded poetry's
highest honor, the Bollingen Prize in 1973. In addition to his poems, Merrill wrote two
novels and an autobiography, A Different Person (1994). James SCULLY (b.1937) won the
Lamont Prize (1967) for the best first book of poetry, The Marches. He co-translated
Aeschylus, Prometheus Bound (1989). He wrote an influential book of essays on poetry, Line
Break: Poetry as Social Practice (1988). Lightly corner creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
