JAMES MICHAEL CHRISTOPHER FITZMAURICE
The Colonel who was a member of the crew of the Bremen, which made the first
successful Trans-Atlantic aircraft flight from East to West, pens this encouraging note to
an admirer, signed in iron gall ink
Autograph Note Signed: "To Eleanor Scanben/'Keep on Flying'/Jas C. Fitzmaurice/Colonel/New
York/New York 19-5-30" in iron gall ink. 5x4½. Affixed on verso is a printed captioned
photograph of Fitzmaurice: "Colonel James Fitzmaurice, who made the westward flight in the
airplane 'Bremen,' just before he started off on his first attempt at motorless flying in a glider,
at Massapequa, N.Y.-Wide World Photo." Irish pilot James Michael Chistopher Fitzmaurice
(1898-1965) was determined to cross the Atlantic on an east-west flight, which was
considerably more difficult at the time than crossing west to east as Lindbergh had done 11
months earlier. On April 12, 1928, Fitzmaurice, Bavarian Captain Hermann Koehl and Baron
Guenther von Huenfeld took off from Baldonnel, Ireland aboard the Bremen, an all-metal
Junkers monoplane. On April 13, 1928, they landed on the frozen surface of a small lake in
Greenly Island in the Strait of Belle Isle on the Gulf of St. Lawrence, between Labrador
and Newfoundland. The Bremen had made its historic flight in 36 hours and two
minutes. Ink notations on front (unknown hand). Vertical fold between the "z" and "m" in
signature. Lightly creased from mounted image on verso. Shaded lower edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
