birthday remembrances and says he may or may not be able to attend the Theatre
World Award
Autograph letter signed: "James", in black ink, 6¼x9. March 9.
In full: "Dear John, Thank you for the Birthday remembrance - yeah - 4
years!! - June 6th a Friday - I've already booked a vacation away from
the studios - so will most likely be away - If not I'll be with you for the
awards - I [illegible] the spring great! Love". James Mitchell
(1920-2010) is best remembered for his role as Palmer Cortlandt on the
television soap opera All My Children (1979-2010). The role earned
him seven Daytime Emmy nominations. The winner of a 1947 Theatre World Award for
his performance in Brigadoon (1947), Mitchell appeared on Broadway stages
for over thirty years in several musicals including Billion Dollar Baby
(1945-1946), Livin' the Life (1957) and Mack & Mabel (1974).
John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the
beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until
2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians
of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World
Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards.
Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in
Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Normal mailing
