The U.S. Senator from Missouri signs a letter to an Alabama man for his collection.
Typed Letter signed: "James P. Kem", as U.S. Senator, 1 page, 8x7.Washington, D.C., 1948 February 25. On letterhead of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry to Mr. M. W. Espy, Jr., Headland, Alabama. In full: "Dear Mr. Espy: In response to your request, I am glad to send you herewith my autograph for your collection. I appreciate your interest. With best wishes, I am Sincerely yours," James Preston Kem (1890-1965) was born in Macon, Missouri. In 1910 he graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia and from Harvard Law School in 1913. He practiced law in Kansas City before serving in the infantry during World War I. After the war, he returned to his law practice in Kansas. In 1946 he was elected as a Republican for a Missouri United States Senate seat. He served from January 3, 1947 until January 3, 1953, vacating the seat after losing his 1952 reelection campaign. He resumed practicing law in Washington D.C. before retiring in 1961. Cut unevenly at edges (8x10½ letter cut at bottom margin to 8x7). Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
