James Sasser (born 1936) began his political career as a Democratic activist and manger of Albert Gore, Sr.'s reelection campaign (1970). He ran for the Senate himself in 1976 and was reelected two times (1977-1995), becoming Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee (1989). He was defeated by a novice Republican doctor in 1976 but was appointed Ambassador to China (1996-1999) by Bill Clinton - he resigned after the US mistakenly bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade and the embassy in Beijing was besieged. Sasser divides his time between Tennessee and Washington, as a consultant. On horizontal mailing fold. Fine condition.
