JAMES ROOSEVELT
FDR's son makes suggestions regarding a plaque to honor his mother.
Typed Letter signed: "James Roosevelt", 1 page, 8½x11. Irvine, California, 1985 August 26. On letterhead of James Roosevelt & Co. to Stella K. Hershan, New York, N. Y. In full: "Thank you for your letter of July 31, 1985. I have written to President Brademas as per enclosed copy. [Item not included.] You might give him a couple of days and then call. The idea of a plaque is a good one if you can keep the cost down to less than $700. It is a good idea to use the facilities of New York University, especially regarding aesthetic standards and text, as well as the City Landmarks Commission. Good luck with your project. Sincerely". James Roosevelt (1907-1991), the eldest son of President Franklin Roosevelt and Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, organized an insurance firm in Boston, became a secretary to his father and then served in the U.S. Marine Corps through WWII (1940-1945). He later represented California in the U.S. Congress from 1955-1965. After a year as U.S. representative with the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Roosevelt returned to the private sector as a public relations consultant. He wrote several books, including My Parents: A Differing View (1976), intended as a rebuttal to his brother Elliott Roosevelt's book detailing his parents' sex lives. Stella Hershan would write a laudatory book about Eleanor Roosevelt, The Candles She Lit. John Brademas, a former Congressman, was President of New York University (1981-1992). Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
