JAMES ROOSEVELT
Writing to a biographer of his mother Eleanor Roosevelt, he recalls a
ceremony in her honor. Signed informally, "Jim Roosevelt".
Typed Letter signed: "Jim Roosevelt", 1 page, 8½x11.
Irvine, California, 1986 October 6. On letterhead of James Roosevelt
& Co. to Stella K. Hershan, New York, N. Y. In full: "Thank you
for your nice note and the clipping from the New York Times telling about the
dedication. It was a day I will long remember and I am so glad you were able to
be a part of the celebration. Thank you again for your kind words and I will be
glad to know that you will visit that little area of the world that was so
special to my mother and keep the memories alive. With warmest good wishes.
Sincerely". James Roosevelt (1907-1991), the eldest son of
President Franklin Roosevelt and Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, organized an
insurance firm in Boston, became a secretary to his father and then
served in the U.S. Marine Corps through WWII (1940-1945). He later
represented California in the U.S. Congress from 1955-1965. After a year
as U.S. representative with the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization, Roosevelt returned to the private sector as a public relations
consultant. He wrote several books, including My Parents: A Differing
View (1976), intended as a rebuttal to his brother Elliott Roosevelt's book
detailing his parents' sex lives. The celebration mentioned in the letter was
certainly the setting aside of a plot in New York's Riverside Park in
remembrance of the former First Lady. An 8-foot statue of her now graces the
spot. Stella Hershan would write a laudatory book about Eleanor
Roosevelt, The Candles She Lit. Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned.
Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
