JAMES SHIGETA
The Hawaiian-born actor signs his name with luck on this black and white, 5x7 photograph
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Evan/Good luck always!/James Shigeta". B/w, 5x7. Hawaiian-born actor James Shigeta (1933-2014), the first Asian-American to crack the Hollywood studio star system, was, for a time, the biggest Asian-American star that U.S. audiences had known for decades. Shigeta, who got his first big break when he won first place as a singer on Ted Mack's Amateur Hour, is perhaps best known for his role as Wang Ta in the 1961 film version of Flower Drum Song, and he would later display both his singing and acting talents in Lost Horizon (1973). In addition to his films, which also include Cry for Happy (1961), Midway (1976), Die Hard (1988), China Cry: A True Story (1990), Mulan (1998, voice of General Li) and A Ribbon of Dreams (2002), Shigeta has appeared in a long list of made-for-TV movies and miniseries, and he has been a guest star on TV shows and series from Alcoa Premiere (1961) to Threat Matrix (2004). Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Name written (unknown hand) in ink on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
