Fields was the American publisher of the best-known British writers as well as American writers and counted among his friends such literary greats as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Greenleaf Whittier, James Russell Lowell, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). Fields, who also brought author Bret Harte east from California, was editor of "Atlantic Monthly" from 1862-1870. Fields and his Boston literary friends Hawthorne, Holmes and Lowell are the central characters in Matthew Pearl's recent mystery bestseller, The Dante Club (2003). Slightly soiled.
