JAMES W. BRADBURY
The United States Senator from Maine signs his respects and name in black ink
Autograph sentiment signed: "With the respects of/ J.W. Bradbury/ Maine" in black ink. 3¾x2 clipping. James Ware Bradbury (1802-1901) was a United States Senator from Maine. After finishing school in 1825, he became principal of Hallowell Academy before finding the first normal school in New England. He went on to study/practice law, serve as editor of the Maine Patriot, and serve as prosecuting attorney for the county (1834-1838) as well as a delegate at the Democratic convention which nominated James K. Polk in 1844. Bradbury himself was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 1847, a position he held until 1853, during which he served as chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Printing, as well as on Retrenchment. He declined nomination for re-election and served as a trustee of his alma mater Bowdoin College and as President of Maine Historical Society in his retirement. Irregularly cut. Toned. Left and right edges frayed. Creased throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
