JAMES WILSON
During his record 16-year service as Secretary of Agriculture, he penned this letter offering Departmental information to a traveler bound for Brazil.
Typed Letter signed: "James Wilson" as Secretary of Agriculture, 1 page, 8x10. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C., 1907 May 1`5. On official letterhead to William Cary Sanger, Sangerfield, New York. In full: "If Mr. M. M. Underdown presents himself at the Department, prior to sailing for Brazil, I shall be glad to allow my Chiefs to give him all available information with regard to dry farming that they may happen to possess. Hoping that you are well and enjoying life, I am very truly yours". James Wilson (1835-1920), born in Scotland, represented Iowa in the US House (1873-1877, 1883-1885). In the very close election of 1882, he was certified as the winner by the State of Iowa, but the new Democratic majority in the House challenged his seat. He held onto it, amidst controversy, until the very end of the Congressional session, when he resigned to avoid a filibuster which would have blocked action on a military pension for former President Grant. Wilson was Secretary of Agriculture under Presidents McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt and Taft (1897-1913) for a total of 16 years, the longest tenure ever for a US Cabinet officer. William Cary Sanger (1853-1923), a career US military officer, had served as Assistant Secretary of War (1901-1903). Multiple mailing folds. Unknown stain at lower edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
