Receipt signed: "James Wong Howe", 4¼x7. Hollywood, California, 1963 September 30. Howe signs acceptance of a bill for film cutting services performed by Otto Stein Technophot of Hollywood. American cinematographer James Wong Howe (1899-1976), born in China, was voted one of the ten most influential cinematographers of all time by the Cinematographers Guild. He was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning two (for The Rose Tattoo, 1955; and Hud, 1963, the year he paid for this film cutting. An innovator lauded for his use of shadow and of "deep focus" techniques, he made smooth transitions from silent to talking films and from black and white (his preferred medium) to color. He was cinematographer on over 130 films between 1921 and 1975, including such famous ones as The Thin Man, Fire Over England, Abe Lincoln in Illinois, King's Row, Yankee Doodle Dandy, The Old Man and the Sea and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Creased. Cancellation perforations, not affecting signature. Staple holes at upper section. Edges chipped.
