JAN KUBELIK and LADY MADCAP THEATRE CAST
Jan Kubelik draws a self-caricature on one side on an album leaf and the theatre cast of Lady Madcap signs on the verso.
Self-caricature signed: "Jan Kubelik". B/w, 3½x6. Ink drawing. Signed on verso by eight members of the Lady Madcap theatre company: "G. P. Huntley", "Herbert Sperling", "Robert St George", "George Canale", "J. Edward Fraser", "Fred Leslie Jr." and one unidentified signature. Czech composer and violin virtuoso JAN KUBELIK (1880-1940) was the subject of the famous Braque painting Violin: "Mozart/Kubelick" (sic) exhibited at the famous "Armory Show" in New York in 1913, giving rise to puns about cubist Braque being the one who put the "cube in Kubelik" and the "art in Mozart". His son was the famed conductor Rafael Kubelik (1914-1996). Lady Madcap was a light musical by Paul Rubens (1975-1917), which appeared on the London stage in 1904. G. P. HUNTLEY (1868-1927), Herbert SPERLING, Robert ST. GEORGE, J. Edward FRASER and Fred LESLIE, JR. (1884-1945) were all British stage actors. Spencer TREVOR (1874-1945) also had many screen credits, including The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943). No information is available on George Canale, though he was presumably an actor as well. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
