JAN MURRAY
Later photograph of the comedian and television personality, signed
in blue ink
Photograph signed: "Jan Murray". B/w, 8x10. Stand-up comedian
and actor Jan Murray (1916-2006) was the "top banana" on the "borscht
belt" circuit before breaking into television in the 1950s. The first
comedian to host a TV game show, Murray is best known for his stint as the
host of Treasure Hunt (1956-1959). He also hosted several other
game shows, had his own show, Jan Murray Time (1955), appeared in
made-for-TV movies and made guest appearances on a long list of television
series. Murray's other film credits include The Busy Body (1967),
Which Way to the Front? (1970) and History of the World: Part I
(1981). A popular emcee, Murray was a familiar figure at celebrity "roasts".
Among the events Murray hosted frequently in his Hollywood home were an annual
Passover Seder, and a comedians' poker game with the likes of Sid Caesar, Milton
Berle, Shecky Greene and Buddy Hackett. Flaws in original negative have
reproduced in upper right background. Corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
