JAN PEERCE
The famed opera singer signs a typed letter, responding in kind to one of his students hoping for a referral
Typed letter signed: "Jan Peerce" in blue ink. 1 page, 6x8½. No place, August 30, 1962. To "Mrs. Winkler," in full: "Your letter of June 13 arrived while I was on tour in Europe. I returned home to a full concert schedule and will be returning to Europe tomorrow evening for another nine weeks. However, I could not leave without sending this most tardy and brief reply to you. Although I am asked many times to recommend singers to teachers, my very busy schedule keeps me from becoming close to most of these students. Therefore, I rarely have the occasion to refer them to teachers. If the time should come, I will be very happy to keep you in mind. I do wish you every success and much luck. Sincerely.". Jan Peerce (1904-1984), born Jacob Perelmuth, debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1941 as Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata. He remained as the Met's leading tenor until 1966, returning to appear regularly there until 1982. Peerce, who had made his operatic debut in May 1938 in Philadelphia as the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, was the first American to sing with the Bolshoi Theatre Opera. Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned around edges and corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
