National Park Series, 6-cent stamp affixed. Postmarked Vienna, Virginia, June
26, 1972. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Jan Sterling (1921-2004) was nominated for a
Best Supporting Actress Oscar (while winning the Golden Globe) for her role as a
mail order bride in The High and the Mighty (1954). She played brassy
women in many feature films, including The Big Carnival (1951), where
she had the line: "I don't go to church. Kneeling bags my nylons." Other credits
for this actress, well known on Broadway stages as well, included the camp
classics Women's Prison (1956) and High School Confidential
(1958). She was married to actors John Merivale (1940s) and Paul Douglas
(1950s). Fine condition.
