JAN VAN BEERS
The eccentric artist signs this short letter explaining that he will paint something for the recipient if he can find a “charming American lady” to have her portrait done
Autograph letter signed: “Jan van Beers” in black ink. 5¼x6¾. Seine et Oise, July 2, no year. Written on letterhead of Chateau de la Barre to “Mr. W.E. Colville”. In full:Dear Sir, It is very kind of you to think me a good painter. - well, then, if you can persuade some charming American lady she must have her portrait painted by me I will thank you with an 'autograph' in oil color. I am, dear Sir, sincerely yours”. Jean Marie Constantin Joseph "Jan" van Beers (1852-1927) was a Belgian painter and illustrator, the son of the poet Jan van Beers. The artist studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Soon afterwards, he became the leader of a group of young artists called the "Van Beers clique." This group included the artists Piet Verhaert, Alexander Struys, and Jef Lambeaux. They were well known for their mischievous and eccentric behavior, including walking around Antwerp dressed in historic costumes. He began with painting historical portraits but after moving to Paris in 1880 switched to genre and portrait works of the middle classes. He is well known for languid portraits of young women in various settings. Lightly toned. Corners rounded. Horizontal and vertical folds. Original mailing envelope included. Otherwise, fine condition.
