JANE ALEXANDER
Regrets letter to Kitty Carlisle Hart, acquired from her estate
Autograph Letter signed: "Jane", 1 page, 6¼x4¼. No place, 2001 October 1. On personal note card to "Dear Kitty". In full: "Ed and I are sorry we cannot be present at your gala Hart serenade. There is no one we would rather sing praises to - You are wonderful. Love". Stage, screen and television actress Jane Alexander portrayed the First Lady in two TV specials, Eleanor and Franklin (1976) and Eleanor and Franklin: the White House Years (1977). Alexander won a Tony Award for The Great White Hope (1969) and an Emmy Award for Playing for Time (1981). She also was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress for The Great White Hope (1971) and Testament (1983) and nominated for Best Supporting Actress Oscars for All The President's Men and Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). She chaired the National Endowment for the Arts from 1993-1997. Having played Eleanor Roosevelt in two TV specials, she won an Emmy as FDR's mother, Sarah Delano Roosevelt, in the TV miniseries Warm Springs (2005). This letter is addressed to, and was in the estate of, versatile singer, actress and TV personality Kitty Carlisle (1910-2007), who was still performing a one-woman show as late as 2006. She was married to playwright Moss Hart until his death in 1961. Corners lightly worn. Fine condition.
