Autograph Letter signed: "Jane", 1 page, 6¼x4¼. No place,
2001 October 1. On personal note card to "Dear Kitty". In full:
"Ed and I are sorry we cannot be present at your gala Hart serenade.
There is no one we would rather sing praises to - You are wonderful. Love".
Stage, screen and television actress Jane Alexander portrayed the First
Lady in two TV specials, Eleanor and Franklin (1976) and Eleanor
and Franklin: the White House Years (1977). Alexander won a Tony
Award for The Great White Hope (1969) and an Emmy Award for
Playing for Time (1981). She also was nominated for Academy Awards for
Best Actress for The Great White Hope (1971) and Testament
(1983) and nominated for Best Supporting Actress Oscars for All The
President's Men and Kramer vs. Kramer (1979).She chaired
the National Endowment for the Arts from 1993-1997. Having played Eleanor
Roosevelt in two TV specials, she won an Emmy as FDR's mother, Sarah Delano
Roosevelt, in the TV miniseries Warm Springs (2005). This letter is
addressed to, and was in the estate of, versatile singer, actress and TV
personality Kitty Carlisle (1910-2007), who was still performing a one-woman
show as late as 2006. She was married to playwright Moss Hart until his death in
1961. Corners lightly worn. Fine condition.
