JANE COWL
Signed typed letter to a fan dated in 1945, discussing a performance in Danville
Typed Letter Signed: "Jane Cowl," 1945 September 25.Addressed to "Lucile Nelms". In full: "Dear Lucile Nelms: Do forgive me, please, for not answering your nice letter before this. Between the summer's heat and an unusual amount of extra work, my correspondence got way beyond my control, and now I'm now endeavoring to catch up. It's very sweet of you to say I've helped to make your vacation a pleasant one, and I'm sorry that school starts soon and you won't be able to listen! Indeed, I do remember playing in Danville, and it's nice to know that I had the pleasure of performing for you. Many thanks for your good wishes and please let me hear from you once in a while, even though you aren't able to hear the program, because you are the type of woman with whom I like to keep in touch. Sincerely". Jane Cowl (1884-1950) was an American actress and playwright. She debuted on Broadway in Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall (1903-1904), the first of 35 Broadway productions that Cowl either acted in, directed or wrote; her last production was a revival of The First Miss Fraser in 1947. Especially known for her interpretations of Shakespearean roles, including Juliet, Cleopatra Viola. Cowl also appeared in 10 movies, including two film adaptations of her play Smilin' Through. Cowl continued acting up to her death; her final acting credit is a starring role in the movie Payment on Demand, released one year after her death. Lightly toned. Normal mailing fold.
