JANE ELIZABETH VEZIN
The actress quotes Shakespeare, "What's in a name?"
Autograph Quotation signed: "What's in a name?'/Yours sincerely/Jane Elizth Vezin/May 25th 78", 3¾x6¼. Englishwoman Jane Elizabeth "Eliza" Vezin (1827-1902) was a child singer and actress under her maiden name, Jane Thomson. After her first marriage (1847), she acted in Britain and Australia as Mrs. Charles Young. Divorced, she remarried to US-born English actor Hermann Vezin in 1863, and performed with him on stage using that name thereafter. She excelled in both comic and Shakespearean roles at Sadler's Wells and Covent Garden, and was particularly applauded in the role of Peg Woffington in Charles Reade's Masks and Faces (1867). There is conflicting information about the Vezin family, with one source claiming she was the mother of Arthur Vezin, active in silent films from 1917, while another says that her 1902 suicide was prompted by the death of her only child. Two horizontal folds. Adhesive residue on verso (light show through) not affecting signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
