5x7. Singer and actress Jane Froman (1907-1980), who performed on the radio, in
nightclubs, on Broadway, in films and on television, began her career as a radio
singer on WLW in Cincinnati in 1928 and by 1932 she was honored as
outstanding radio artist in America. On February 23, 1943, while
touring for the U.S.O., Froman was seriously injured in a plane crash,
but she overcame her injuries to fulfill her commitment to the U.S.O. in 1945,
appearing in 95 shows in Europe. Froman, who appeared in three feature
films, Kissing Time (1933), Stars Over Broadway (1935) and
Radio City Revels (1938), was the technical advisor and provided the
singing voice for the 1952 biopic, With a Song in My Heart, which
starred Susan Hayward in her Academy Award (Best Actress) nominated role as
Froman. Froman also hosted her own Emmy Award-nominated TV series, USA
Canteen (1952), and she was a guest on Toast of the Town (later
The Ed Sullivan Show) six times and appeared on an episode of What's
My Line? Froman was also known for her work with various charities.
