JANE WITHERS. Lengthy ALS: "Jane", 3½p, 4½x7. No place, circa 1974. To actress Joan Crawford. After writing about her family, Withers pens, in part: "I love this lovely business that we share so much & thank God daily that my dear mother wanted me to be in show business for I've truly appreciated the really marvelous times I've had and the privilege of meeting beautiful people in all walks of life. You-Cary Grant-Fred Astaire-Roz Russell-Gene Kelly are my Super Stars and dear Judy Garland. Every Auction where movie sets or any costumes or memorabilia are sold I try to never miss. I just about bought out 20th when they had their auction. To my greatdisappointment I missed completely the MGM Auction [crying face] and could get nothing from them & therefore missed trying to purchase some of your costumes...I am on the board of Hollywood Walk of Fame Chamber of Commerce...Bless you for always being the real person you are and caring for you are truly the Queen of our Hollywood Stars and always will be...." Jane Withers was taught to sing and dance before she was three. At four, she was starring on her own radio program in Atlanta, doing imitations of such celebrities as Greta Garbo, ZaSu Pitts and Maurice Chevalier. Relocating to Hollywood with her mother in 1932, Jane began her film career with bit parts, eventually (at age eight) winning the plum role of the obnoxious brat who bedevils sweet little Shirley Temple in Bright Eyes. This role won Jane a contract at Fox Studios, and for the next seven years she starred in a series of comedies and musicals. To TV viewers of the 1960s and 1970s, Withers will be forever associated with her long-running (and extremely lucrative) stint as Josephine the Plumber in a popular series of commercials for Comet cleanser. Staple holes at upper left blank corner of first and third pages. Paper clip rust stain at mid-right margin of fourth page (light show through to third page). Fine condition.
