JANE WITHERS. Partly Printed DS: "Jane Withers", 1p, 8½x5½. West Los Angeles,
California, 1937 June 14. Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation employee form.
Withers' name printed on first line. Withers' Occupation ("Actress"), address, telephone,
marital status, Date of birth ("April 12, 1926"), age ("11"), place of birth ("Atlanta, Ga.") and
length of residence in California ("5 yrs") have been filled in (unknown hand). To the right of
her signature, Withers has drawn a stick figure and labeled it: "me". In the year she signed
this document, the child actress appeared in five films: Checkers, 45 Fathers, Wild and
Wooly, Angel's Holiday and The Holy Terror. Jane Withers (1926-2021) was taught to
sing and dance before she was three. At four, she was starring on her own radio program in
Atlanta, doing imitations of such celebrities as Greta Garbo, ZaSu Pitts and Maurice
Chevalier. Relocating to Hollywood with her mother in 1932, Jane began her film career
with bit parts, eventually (at age eight) winning the plum role of the obnoxious brat who
bedevils sweet little Shirley Temple in Bright Eyes. This role won Jane a contract at Fox
Studios, and for the next seven years she starred in a series of comedies and musicals. Her later
films included Giant (1956) and Captain Newman, M.D., and Withers has also voiced a
number of animated TV characters and guest starred on several TV series, from The
Chevrolet Tele-Theatre (1949) to Murder, She Wrote (1993). To TV viewers of the 1960s
and 1970s, Withers will be forever associated with her long-running (and extremely lucrative)
stint as Josephine the Plumber in a popular series of commercials for Comet cleanser. Lightly
creased with folds, vertical fold at the "W" in Withers. ½-inch tear at lower right blank margin,
nicked at lower left blank edge. Lightly soiled. Red pencil notes (unknown hand) above 2
lines, pencil note beneath ink date. Overall, fine condition.
