leaf.GIL LAMB (1904-1995) was an American comedian and actor with 60 movie and TV
shows to his credit. Rubber-limbed and faced, Lamb got his show biz start as a vaudevillian
in the 1930s, entertaining audiences as an eccentric actor and an act, his most famous,
where he pretended to swallow a harmonica. He got his start in movies in 1935's Roof
Tops of Manhattan. His roles included support roles and specialty players in Paramount
musicals like The Fleet's In (1942) and Rainbow Island (1946) and as Humphrey Pennyworth
in a series of films based on the Joe Palooka comic strip - a puzzling choice, as Pennyworth
was obese in the strip. Lamb starred in a series of two-reel comedies at RKO Radio between
1949 to 1952, then returned to radio, with guest starring roles in TV shows and un-credited
cameo appearances in Disney productions. He also hosted the TV variety show Window on
the World (1949). JANE WITHERS (1926-2021) was starring at age four on her own radio
program in Atlanta, doing imitations of celebrities. She began her film career with bit parts,
eventually (at age eight) winning the plum role of the obnoxious brat who bedevils sweet
little Shirley Temple in Bright Eyes. This role won Jane a contract at Fox Studios, and for
the next seven years she starred in a series of comedies and musicals. Her later films included
Giant (1956) and Captain Newman, M.D., and Withers also voiced a number of animated
TV characters and guest starred on several TV series. To TV viewers of the 1960s and 1970s,
Withers will be forever associated with her long-running (and extremely lucrative) stint as
Josephine the Plumber in a popular series of commercials for Comet cleanser. Lightly toned
at upper margin. Binding holes at left margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
