JANE WITHERS. Self-Caricature signed: "Lovingly,/Jane Withers" on verso of postal card, 5½x3¼. Withers has drawn a stick figure at lower right corner, labeling it: "me". 1-cent imprinted postal card, postmarked Beverly Hills, Calif., February 24, 1938. Addressed in unknown hand to a collector in Wisconsin. Ink note (unknown hand) at lower margin: "Beverly Hills, California - 2-24-38". In the year she signed this drawing, Withers appeared in three feature films: Always in Trouble, Keep Smiling and Rascals. Jane Withers (born in 1926) was taught to sing and dance before she was three. At four, she was starring on her own radio program in Atlanta, doing imitations of such celebrities as Greta Garbo, ZaSu Pitts and Maurice Chevalier. Relocating to Hollywood with her mother in 1932, Jane began her film career with bit parts, eventually (at age eight) winning the plum role of the obnoxious brat who bedevils sweet little Shirley Temple in Bright Eyes. This role won Jane a contract at Fox Studios, and for the next seven years she starred in a series of comedies and musicals. Her later films included Giant (1956) and Captain Newman, M.D., and Withers has also voiced a number of animated TV characters and guest starred on several TV series, from The Chevrolet Tele-Theatre (1949) to Murder, She Wrote (1993). To TV viewers of the 1960s and 1970s, Withers will be forever associated with her long-running (and extremely lucrative) stint as Josephine the Plumber in a popular series of commercials for Comet cleanser. Lightly creased, light vertical crease at the "e" of me. Lightly soiled, touching signature. Chipped at upper right blank corner. Overall, fine condition.
