Janet Suzman (b. 1939), the niece of anti-apartheid activist Helen Suzman,
joined England's Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963. She played many of the
best female roles, including Ophelia in Hamlet, Kate in The Taming
of the Shrew, and Cleopatra in Antony and Cleopatra. Most often seen
on stage in the classics, she also appeared in works by contemporary
playwrights: Genet, Pinter, Albee and others. Her film debut as Tsarina
Alexandra in Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) earned her Academy, British
Academy and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress. Remaining primarily a
stage actress in both England and South Africa, she has continued to appear in
occasional films, such as the anti-apartheid A Dry White Season (1989),
and on television. She directed a London rendition of Hamlet in 2007.
