JANIS PAIGE
Revision of the pay provisions in her contract for on-location filming of Dark Road in Rome
Documentary Letter signed: "Janis Page/subject to letters of amendment/referred to herein", 5 pages, 8½x11. Los Angeles, California, 1949 July 9. Paige signs acceptance of a change in the compensation formula for her performance in the film Dark Road, also signed by a representative of Venus Productions. Paige is to receive $500 per week, commencing with her departure from the United States to Rome, Italy, site of the filming; but capped at a total of $5,000. An additional $5,000 of the total $10,000 salary promised under her original contract is to be paid only after that sum has been recouped from revenues from distribution of the film. Actress/singer Janis Paige (born Donna Mae Jaden in 1922) made her feature film debut in Hollywood Canteen (1944). In addition to appearing in a number of feature films, including Of Human Bondage (1946), Silk Stockings (1957), Please Don't Eat the Daisies (1960) and Love at the Top (1986), Paige also enjoyed success on Broadway, appearing in the Tony Award-winning musical, Pajama Game (1954-1955; the film role went to her Warner Bros. rival, Doris Day), and in Remains to Be Seen, Here's Love, Mame and Alone Together. She was married to her third husband, songwriter Ray Gilbert (1912-1976), who won the 1947 Academy Award for his song, "Zip-i-Dee-Doo-Dah", from 1962 until his death in 1976, when she was placed in charge of her husband's Ipanema Music Company. Paige has also appeared in a number of made-for-TV movies and guested on a number of TV series, including All in the Family (as a waitress with whom Archie Bunker has a brief affair), and was featured on daytime soaps. Dark Road, the movie featured here, was first released in Italy under that title, La Strada Buia, in 1950. It was released in the US in 1951 as Fugitive Lady, with Paige in the lead role. Filing holes and staples at top edge. Corners worn. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
