JARED SPARKS
The educator sends a letter to an associate regarding a previous lecture he gave on Arnold, though it is unsure who 'Arnold' is
Autograph letter signed: "Jared Sparks", 1¼p, 5x8, inlaid, 2 pages. Cambridge, 1845 November 13. To George Folsom, New York. In full: "When I lectured under your auspices in New York, you caused a great map to be made illustrative of the lecture on Arnold. I remember you told me at the time that I might have it. As I presume it can be of no use to the Society for any purpose, I should now be very glad to accept your offer, if it has been preserved. If you will put it into the hands of the bearer, my nephew, Jared Sparks, he will forward it to me, and you will confer a particular favor on your friend, & obt. Svt." At the time of this letter, historian, editor and educator Jared Sparks (1789-1866) was McLean Professor of History at Harvard (1838-1849) and was editing the second series of The Library of American Biography (1844-1847), a total of 25 volumes whose first series had been written from 1834-1838. Sparks had previously edited the "North American Review" (1824-1830) and founded and edited "The American Almanac and Repository of Useful Knowledge" (1830). President of Harvard from 1849-1853, he also wrote or edited Correspondence of the American Revolution (12 volumes, 1829-1830), The Writings of George Washington (12 volumes, 1834-1837) and The Works of Benjamin Franklin (10 volumes, 1836-1840). Lightly creased with folds (not at signature). Light show through of ink. Otherwise, fine condition.
