Signatures: "Jared Sparks", in black ink, 2¾x¾ affixed to a
5¾x8¾ sheet bearing the educator's image. Editor and educator Jared Sparks
(1783-1850) was McLean Professor of History at Harvard (1838-1849) and was
editing the second series of The Library of American Biography
(1844-1847), a total of 25 volumes whose first series had been written from
1834-1838. Sparks had previously edited the "North American Review"
(1824-1830) and founded and edited "The American Almanac and Repository of
Useful Knowledge" (1830). President of Harvard from 1849-1853, he also wrote
or edited Correspondence of the American Revolution (12 volumes,
1829-1830), The Writings of George Washington (12 volumes, 1834-1837) and
The Works of Benjamin Franklin (10 volumes, 1836-1840). Signature
slightly soiled. Light surface creases. Fine condition.
