JASCHA HEIFETZ
The master violinist signs a stamp depicting Benjamin
Franklin.
Stamp signed: "Jascha Heifetz/1943", ¾x1, mounted on a 3½x2
card. Half cent stamp depicting Benjamin Franklin. Jascha Heifetz
(1901-1987) is universally regarded as the greatest violinist of the 20th
century. After great success as a child prodigy in Europe, Heifetz
immigrated to the United States at the age of 16 (1917). He became an even
greater artist in his mature years, combining brilliantly reasoned, tranquil
interpretation with unsurpassed virtuoso technique. Heifetz arranged a number of
works for the violin and commissioned several concertos from contemporary
composers. Items from Heifetz' stamp collection were sold at auction after
his death in 1987. Part of his collection can be seen at the Cardinal Spellman
Museum of Stamps & Postal History at Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts.
Pin hole stain at lower right margin. Fine condition.
