Winning the Academy Award for his role as a sociopathic hit-man in No Country for Old Men (2007), he is the first Spaniard to win an Academy Award. The versatile actor was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in Before Night Falls (2000). Coming from a family full of actors, Bardem was noticed at 20 years old for his small Spanish-speaking role in The Ages of Lulu (1990), in which he appeared alongside his mother, Pilar Bardem. He gave due credit to actor John Malkovich for finding the Spanish speaking actor and offering him his first English-speaking role, which he initially turned down, but due to lengthy financial processing time was able to learn English well enough to take the lead role in Malkovich's The Dancer Upstairs (2002). Additionally, the actor has been in such films as: Collateral (2004) Love in the Time of Cholera (2007), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), Eat Pray Love (2010), Skyfall (2012) and many more in Spanish and English. Throughout his career, Bardem has received several Golden Globe, Oscar, and SAG nominations, earning him a well-respected spot in Hollywood.
