JAY C. FLIPPEN. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Roger Harris/Cordially/Jay C Flippen". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7½x9¼ (one surface). ©1954, Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 1954, Flippen appeared in two feature films, Carnival Story and The Far Country, and made a guest appearance on TV's The Ford Television Theatre. An early vaudeville and Broadway performer (Broadway Brevities, 1920), the multitalented Jay C. Flippen (1898-1970) could sing, dance, act and clown by the time he broke into films in 1934 (Marie Galante, Million Dollar Ransom). The prolific character actor is best known for supporting James "Jimmy" Stewart in such films as Winchester '73 (1950), Bend of the River (1952), Thunder Bay (1953), The Far Country (1954), Strategic Air Command (1955), The Restless Breed (1957), Night Passage (1957) and Firecreek (1968), but his film credits also include The Lemon Drop Kid (1951), How the West Was Won (1962) and Cat Ballou (1965). Also a radio announcer (he was one of radio's first game show emcees), Flippen was equally at home on television, appearing in made-for-TV movies and guest starring on TV series from The Ford Television Theatre (1954) to Here Come the Brides (1970), appearing from 1964 in a wheelchair after the amputation of a leg. He was married to screenwriter Ruth Brooks Flippen, whose credits include the Gidget movies, from 1947-1971. Lightly creased at blank corners and margins. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on), diagonal creases at the lower loop of th "J" in Jay and touching two words of inscription. Glue stains on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
