JAY COOKE
The American financier pens a letter regarding sending an admirer an
autograph and magazine, dated 1902
Autograph Letter Signed: "Jay Cooke", 1p, 5¼x6¾. Ogontz,
1902 February 5. To Robert Goebel, Pine Grove, Cumberland County,
Pennsylvania. In full: "In addition to sending you my autograph as
requested I will mail you a copy of the 'Era' a magazine [not included]
just issued & containing something that may interest you & other of my
Pine Grove fr'ds." Financier Jay Cooke (1821-1905) wrote this letter from
his Ogontz, Pennsylvania home, Eildon, built in 1881. Cooke marketed
government bonds for financing the Civil War, raising over $2,000,000 in 1861,
following the battle of Bull Run. The fiscal agent for the U.S. Treasury
(1862-1864, 1865), Cooke later financed the construction of western railroads.
Problems in building the Northern Pacific Railroad (the second transcontinental
railroad) forced Cooke to close Jay Cooke & Co., sparking the financial
crisis of 1873. He later recouped his fortune with silver mines in Utah
(1878-1879) and investments in real estate in the West. Lightly toned. Multiple
mailing folds. Ink smear at "o" in Ogontz. Otherwise, fine
condition.
