The American financier pens this letter dated in 1902 regarding sending the recipient a
letter
Autograph letter signed "Jay Cooke". 1 page, 5¾x6½, 1 sheet folded, on stationery from
Eildon in Ogontz, Pennsylvania. July 1, 1902. Addressed to O. P. Girmley in Kutztown,
Pennsylvania. In full: "My dear Sir I have yr letter & have handed it to Mr Butter who will
send you one of Mr Chases [sic] letters if he can find one suitable to send - He keep all my
documents - but is quite [illegible] and may not be able to go to the office at present. Sincerely
yrs". Eildon was Cooke's home in Ogontz, Pennsylvania. It was bought by Charles Denis
Barney, his son-in-law in 1878. After burning down in 1881, it was rebuilt. Cooke lived at
Eildon with his daughter and son-in-law. American financier Cooke (1821-1905, born in
Sandusky, Ohio) marketed government bonds for financing the Civil War, raising over
$2,000,000 following the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861. He served as fiscal agent for the
U.S. Treasury (1862-1864, 1865) and after the war, financed the construction of western
railroads. Problems in building the Northern Pacific Railroad (the second transcontinental
railroad) and the financial crisis of 1873 forced Cooke to close his business Jay Cooke & Co.
He later recouped his fortune with silver mines in Utah in 1878 and 1879 and investments in
real estate in the West. Lightly soiled. Adhesive tape on vero. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
