JAY COOKE
The American financier pens this letter regarding his grandson's recovery from an illness.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Jay Cooke", 1p, 5¼x6¾. Ogontz, Pennsylvania, 1901 December 19. With original stamped envelope, addressed by Cooke to: "S. Sellers, Upper Darby, Penna." In full: "Yrs 18th recd & as requested I send the numbers on the Photos The full facet one 81.458 side 852553 My grandson continues to improve slightly with strong expectations of complete recovery & none others are ill. God so good to me." "Ogontz" was the home that financier Jay Cooke (1821-1905) built near Philadelphia. Although he lost the home when his firm went bankrupt after the Civil War, he was able to repurchase the mansion, which he later leased to an exclusive girls' school. His business, Jay Cooke & Co., failed in the financial crisis of 1873, but Cooke recouped his fortune in silver mining in 1878 and 1879. Letter is lightly soiled. Nicked at blank left edge, upper left blank corner torn away. Overall, fine condition. Envelope is soiled and stained. Ink smudged at 2 words. Torn at blank left edge. Two items.
