JAY COOKE
The financier signs on this check for $252.24, dated in 1868!
Check Signed: "Jay Cooke & Co", 8x3¾. Philadelphia, 1868 March 30. Check No. 5163, drawn on Jay Cooke & Co. Bankers payable in gold to "Theo. Kitchen Cash'r" for $252.24. The signer's father, Eleutheros Cooke, is pictured at left. Financier Jay Cooke (1821-1905) marketed government bonds for financing the Civil War, raising over $2,000,000 in 1861, following the battle of Bull Run. He served as fiscal agent for the U.S. Treasury (1862-1864, 1865) and after the war, financed the construction of western railroads. Problems in building the Northern Pacific Railroad (the second transcontinental railroad) forced Cooke to close Jay Cooke & Co., sparking the financial crisis of 1873. He later recouped his fortune with silver mines in Utah in 1878 and 1879 and investments in real estate in the West. Lightly creased with folds, light vertical folds at the "y" in Jay and the "Co" and "k" of Cooke. Pencil cancellation touches the flourish of the "J". Lightly soiled. Stamp at upper left touches payee line. Otherwise, fine condition.
