16. Scorecard for Round 2 of the 89th U.S. Open Championship, held on the
East Course of the Oak Hill Country Club from June 15-18, 1989. Sigel shot
37 on the first nine holes and 39 on the back nine for a total score of 76. He
had shot 77 in the previous round for a combined score of 153. Also
signed by the Marker on opposite page and initialed by a verifier at
the 18th hole on signature page. The 1989 U.S. Open was won by Curtis
Strange, who had won the event the previous year. Robert Jay Sigel (born in
1943) was one of America's finest amateur golfers, winning
back-to-back U.S. Amateur crowns (1982, 1983). After turning pro in
1994, Sigel set a course record of 62 at the 1998 Bell Atlantic
Classic, and he also fired a career best 10-under 61 at the EMC Kaanapali
Classic in Hawaii. Named "2000 Most Courageous Athlete" by the
Philadelphia Sportswriters Association and "2002 Comeback Player of the
Year" by "GOLF World" magazine, Sigel, who has also enjoyed a successful
business career ranging from golf course design to insurance, is the
founder and host of the Siegel Charity Invitational for Cancer research.
Lightly creased with folds, vertical folds at the "g" of Sigel and the flourish
of Marker's signature. Slightly soiled on front and back covers, tackhead-size
orange label at blank area of back cover, which lists "The Rules of the United
States Golf Association Govern Play". Overall, fine condition.
