JAY SILVERHEELS
Black and white publicity photograph of Jay Silverheels as Tonto,
"faithful Indian companion" of the Lone Ranger.
Photograph signed: "Jay Silverheels/Tonto/1980". B/w, 8x10.
Shown as Tonto, "faithful Indian companion" of the Lone Ranger, in still from
that TV series (1949-1957). Silverheels (1918-1980) had many other film
roles, including three performances as Geronimo in Westerns of the 1950s.
Dissatisfied with what he considered the stereotyped performances assigned to
"Tonto", he founded the Indian Actors Workshop in Hollywood in the late
1960s with the dual goals of creating more acting opportunities for Native
Americans and of improving their screen image. In 1979 he became the first
American Indian (a full-blooded Mohawk) with a star in Hollywood's Walk of
Fame. A horse lover, he was a competitive harness racer. Shaky post-stroke
signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
