JAY "TONTO" SILVERHEELS - AUTOGRAPHED INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH - HFSID 167548
Price: $750.00
JAY SILVERHEELS
Black and white publicity photograph of Jay Silverheels as
Tonto.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Erma/Best Wishes/Jay
Silverheels/'Tonto'". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7x8¼ (one surface). Shown as
Tonto. Best known as "Tonto", "the faithful Indian companion" of television's
Lone Ranger (1949-1957), Silverheels (1918-1980) had many
other film roles, including three performances as Geronimo in Westerns of the
1950s. Dissatisfied with what he considered the stereotyped parts assigned to
"Tonto", he founded the Indian Actors Workshop in Hollywood in the late
1960s with the dual goals of creating more acting opportunities for Native
Americans and of improving their screen image. In 1979 he became the first
American Indian (a full-blooded Mohawk) with a star in Hollywood's Walk of
Fame. Lightly creased. Slightly soiled in right margin. Otherwise, fine
condition.
